The historic Capitol Theatre is host to world class musicals, theatre and ballet. With a rich history that dates back more than 100 years, it is Sydney’s oldest and grandest theatre. The flamboyant 2000 seat auditorium was fantastically imagined in an ‘atmospheric’ style in the 1920s by renowned American theatre designer, John Eberson, and continues to impress audiences to this day. The theatre was completely refurbished and reopened in 1995, with new stage mechanics, back of house facilities and a completely restored auditorium.
In recent years the Capitol Theatre has hosted major musicals including Wicked, Mary Poppins, The Lion King, Les Miserables, Kinky Boots and Aladdin; national and international ballet including The Australian Ballet and The Paris Opera Ballet, national opera including Opera Australia, headline concerts and product launch events for major corporations.
The Sydney Lyric Theatre opened in 1997 and has a history of welcoming legendary international performers such as Elton John and Al Pacino as well as hosting World Premieres of Strictly Ballroom the Musical and Dream Lover. With recent foyer and auditorium upgrades in excess of $18 million, this breathable theatre is a truly unique and premium venue.
In 2019 the Sydney Lyric hosted a commercial season of the awarded Australian production Muriel’s Wedding the Musical. In recent years the Sydney Lyric has hosted major musicals including Broadway blockbuster, The Book of Mormon, the Australian Premiere seasons of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Matilda the Musical and record-breaking masterpiece Hamilton.
